How to Notch Your Eyebrow

Eyebrow slits, also known as eyebrow cuts, or notches, are a trend that became popular in the 90s made fashionable by hip-hop artists, and before this we can even find evidence that “notching” was used throughout history and across cultures.

In 2020, notching is used for aesthetic purposes, but it can also be a form of penalty among friends when someone calls a bluff, or loses a bet.  Done the right way, and it can make a statement. Done incorrectly, and, well, it might look like your eyebrow got swiped at by your cat.

What Should I Consider Before Notching My Brow?

Do it because YOU want to.

Look, when making any changes to our body, temporary or permanent, make sure you have done your research, and that you’re going ahead for the right reasons. If you’re making a change in your appearance evaluate why, and what it will do for you!

How do I notch my eyebrow?

Step 1: Clean up and brush out your eyebrows

You’ll want to make sure that you’re working with a clean, well manicured brow. So go ahead and wipe your face with a cloth, and then brush out your brow hairs with a comb or brush.

Step 2: Draw vertical lines on your brow with white eyeliner

Measure 3 times, cut once. Although not completely necessary its best if you map out where the notches will go. Marking vertical lines with a washable pencil will help give you an idea of where your eyebrow slits should go. You’ll want to decide whether slits will be on both brows, or in just one.

  • Choose between a minimum of 1 and maximum of 3 slits per each eyebrow. Fuller eyebrows can handle more slits, so factor in how much space you have to lose.
  • Typically, eyebrow notches are made usually at the highest point of the brow arch, towards the tail of the brow.

Step 3: Place a piece of tape on either side of the line

To ensure that you get a straight, even look you may want to tape off the slits with tape. This will act as a guide.

Step 4: Shave in between the pieces of tape

Using clippers, a razor, or scissors begin to trim away the hairs between the pieces of tape. Taking your time will help achieve a nice clean, straight pattern.

Tip: Move up and down only. Avoid shaving side to side.

Step 5: Remove tape and wipe away eyeliner and loose hairs

Carefully remove the tape so that you don’t accidentally remove other brow hairs. Wipe away any eyeliner and hairs that have been left behind with your finger and some water.

Step 6: Remove any remaining hairs

For any hairs that are left behind simply pluck these away with a pair of tweezers.

How long will eyebrow notches last?

It could be up to 4 to 6 weeks before your eyebrow notches grow in.

Should I wax my notches?

Its not necessary (or recommended) to wax your brow notches. Slits are usually temporary and so you’ll want to be able to grow your hair back eventually. You can easily maintain your notch by shaving. Avoid over-plucking your brows as this could prevent your brow hairs from coming back.

How do I hide my eyebrow slits? What if I want my brows back?

If you’d like to undo your brow slits then the easiest solution is to simply allow the hairs to grow back.

But, if you’re in a rush and you need to have your brows back fast then go ahead and powder or draw them back in.

What if my eyebrows won't come back after I notched them?

Over-plucking our brows can lead to long term hair loss. In the event that your brow hair doesn’t come bak as quickly (or at all ) you can try a few things:

Brow growth serum
